<p>Lackey General Merchandise and Warehouse is a historic commercial building at the northeast corner of Arkansas Highway 66 and North Peabody Avenue in the center of Mountain View, Arkansas. It is a roughly rectangular two-story structure, built out of local stone, with a flat roof surrounded by a low parapet. Its main facade faces west toward the Stone County Courthouse, with plate glass windows topped by awnings on the first floor, and four sash windows on the second. The main entrance is in an angle at the street corner, with the building corner supported by a square stone post. Built in 1924, it is believed to be the largest commercial building in Stone County.</p><br>
<p>The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.</p><br>
<p>Passo Frontè  is a mountain pass in the Province of Imperia . It connects Montegrosso Pian Latte, located in the Arroscia Valley, with Monesi di Triora .</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>Passo Frontè is located on the main chain of the Alps between Monte Frontè (2152 m) and cima Garlenda (2041 m). Near the pass there are some ruins of an old barrak.</p><br>
<h2>Hiking</h2><br>
<p>The pass is accessible by off-road mountain paths coming from the nearby valleys and is crossed by the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri, a long-distance trail from Ventimiglia (province of Imperia) to Bolano (province of La Spezia).</p><br>
<p>During snowy winters the pass can also be reached with snowshoes.</p><br>

<p>Brown County Courthouse Historic District is a historic courthouse and national historic district located at Nashville, Brown County, Indiana. It encompasses three contributing buildings: the courthouse, Old Log Jail, and the Historical Society Museum Building. The Brown County Courthouse was built in 1873-1874, and is a two-story, Greek Revival style brick building. It has a gable roof and two-tiered, flat-roofed frame tower. The Old Log Jail was built in 1879, and is a small two-story log building. It measures 12 feet by 20 feet, and was used as a jail until 1922. The Historical Society Museum Building, or Brown County Community Building, is a two-story, rectangular log building. It was moved to its present location in 1936-1937. The Works Progress Administration funded the reconstruction and remodeling of the building.</p><br>
<p>It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.</p><br>
<p>The West Darien Historic District is a historic district in Darien, Georgia. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places  on September 17, 2001.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Darien was founded in 1736 about 1 mile from Fort King George, which was built in 1721. Darien was directly protected by Fort Darien, built in 1736. The current streets were laid out in a 1806 plan. The town was mostly destroyed in 1863 when it was burned by Union troops. Rebuilding the town started on the east side, followed by the west side. The east side of historic Darien is in the NRHP Vernon Square-Columbus Square Historic District. As of 2001, only one antebellum structure remained; otherwise the oldest buildings are from 1870-1910. The district includes 143 contributing buildings and eight contributing sites.</p><br>
<h2>Archaeology</h2><br>
<p>The district contains a number of archaeological sites that were the subject of two studies in 1978 and 1983 as part of construction projects. These studies yielded both prehistoric and antebellum artifacts.</p><br>

<p>The Ogunquit Memorial Library is the public library of Ogunquit, Maine. It is located at 166 Shore Road, in an architecturally distinguished Romanesque Revival built in 1897 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. It was a gift to the town by Mrs. George Conarroe in honor of her husband.</p><br>
<p>The library is open daily except Sunday during the summer (May to October), and Wednesday-Saturday except holidays during the off-season.</p><br>
<h2>Architecture and history</h2><br>
<p>The Ogunquit Memorial Library is located on the west side of Shore Road in central Ogunquit, in an area with many seaside resort accommodations. It is a rectangular building, fashioned out randomly course fieldstone, with a hip roof and a projecting gabled entrance. At one corner of the entrance stands an engaged circular staircase tower with a conical roof above a molded cornice. Eyebrow dormers project from some of the roof elevations. The interior is well-preserved, its original features including a large fireplace that was at first its sole heat source.</p><br>
<p>The library was built in 1897 to a design by Philadelphia architect John M. Burns, and is one of the finest examples of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture in southern Maine. The building was enlarged in 1914 to a design by Henry A. Macomb, also of Philadelphia; the quality of design and execution make it virtually impossible to distinguish the addition from the original. The library was the gift of Philadelphia resident Mrs. George Conarroe in honor of her husband.</p><br>
<p>The Mays General Store is a historic commercial building on Frost Street in Gilbert, Arkansas. It is a single-story vernacular brick building, built as two separate buildings in 1901 and 1906, at which time the intervening wall was knocked out. It has two separate storefronts, each with entrances recessed in angled opening, with transom windows above the doors. The interior retains original shelving and wainscoting, as well as display cases and other fixtures. The porch was replaced in the 1930s. It is the last surviving commercial building in the small community, whose business declined after railroads stopped running through town in the 1940s.</p><br>
<p>The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.</p><br>
<p>State Savings Loan and Trust is a historic bank building located at 428 Maine Street in Quincy, Illinois. The bank was built in 1892 for brothers Lorenzo and Charles H. Bull, who were prominent Quincy businessmen and community leaders. Chicago architectural firm Patton & Fisher designed the bank in the Richardsonian Romanesque style; local architect Ernest M. Wood designed an addition for the building in 1906. The building has a five-bay facade, with three bays on the original portion and two on the addition; the bays are each marked by a window with a thick stone arch. The original section is topped by a large front-facing gable, providing for attic space above the second story.</p><br>
<p>The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 23, 1979.</p><br>
<p>The Richard F. Newcomb House is a historic house located at 1601 Maine Street in Quincy, Illinois. The house was built in 1890-91 for Richard F. Newcomb, the founder of the Quincy Paper Company; the company eventually became a national strawboard-producing firm. Local architects Harvey Chatten and Ernest M. Wood collaborated on the houses Richardsonian Romanesque design; the style choice was inspired by the recently-built William S. Warfield House, which Newcomb admired and wished to outdo. The three-story house has a massive limestone exterior with a red shingled roof. The houses wraparound front porch is supported by limestone pillars; smaller porches are located throughout the design. A large conical tower and a smaller octagonal tower rise from the southwest and southeast corners of the house respectively.</p><br>
<p>John A. Stillwell, Newcombs son-in-law and president of the Electric Wheel Company, bought the house from Newcomb in 1910. The Stillwell family donated the house to Quincy College in 1941; the college used the house as a womens dormitory.</p><br>
<p>The house is now home to the Quincy Museum. The first floor has been restored, and the second and third floors feature exhibits on local history, natural history, dinosaurs and area Native Americans.</p><br>
<p>The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 3, 1982.</p><br>
<p>The Clay Hill Historic District in Hartford, Connecticut is a 60 acre historic district that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, and expanded in 1984. Northwest of Downtown Hartford, the district is roughly bounded by Main, Mather, Garden, and Walnut Streets. The Clay Hill Historic District spans roughly 60 acres of the neighborhood and contains examples of Queen Anne, Italianiate and Neoclassical Revival architecture.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Clay Arsenal is one of Hartfords oldest neighborhoods, developed in the middle and late 19th century. It was mainly farmland prior to 1847, when the Hartford-Springfield Railroad, which now forms the neighborhoods eastern border, was constructed. At one time, Windsor and Main streets intersected just north of Downtown. When the streets were reconfigured, several buildings and a public green were lost.</p><br>
<p>The section west of Main Street lies on a gentle rise above Downtown and is known as Clay Hill, so named for the type of soil there. The area east of Main Street has been known since 1812 as the Arsenal District, when a State Arsenal was constructed on the corner of North Main and Pavilion streets. The arsenal was demolished in 1909. The mid-19th century development of the Clay Hill area from rural to urban conditions was caused by the strong industrial growth of the city. As the city&#39;s factories rapidly grew more successful, the community at large was forced to keep up. The changes took the form of converting the farm land of long-time residents to city streets for new home owners.</p><br>
<p>Multi-family dwellings were the dominant development in the late 19th century as the neighborhood became home to Irish and Jewish working-class families. The Irish had been emigrating to Hartford through a recruitment effort for work on the Enfield Canal in Windsor Locks. In 1895, Clay Hill was predominantly Irish and was served by Saint Patrick&#39;s church in downtown Hartford. At about the same time, large numbers of Jews began arriving from Eastern Europe due to the anti-Semitic sentiment there. The new emigrants established themselves in the Arsenal district as grocers, tailors, butchers and jewelers along Main Street and Albany Avenue.</p><br>
<p>During the 20th century mobility continued. By the third quarter of the 20th century the residents of Clay Hill were almost exclusively black and Hispanic.</p><br>
<p>The S.J. Lesem Building is a historic commercial building located at 135-37 North 3rd Street in Quincy, Illinois. The building was constructed in 1871 for S.J. Lesem Brothers and Company, a dry goods firm founded in 1859; it is the only survivor of the four commercial buildings which once occupied the block, which was known as Wholesale Row. After the dry goods company changed ownership and moved elsewhere, the Quincy Casket Company occupied the building from 1912 to 1977. The four-story building has a commercial Italianate design. The building&#39;s windows are tall and narrow with arched or pedimented hoods, and its storefront features brick pilasters and cast iron columns. Cast iron quoins adorn the corners of the building. The top of the building features a bracketed cornice and a pediment on the front facade.</p><br>
<p>The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 22, 1999.</p><br>
<p>The One Thirty North Eighth Building is a historic building located at 130 North 8th Street in Quincy, Illinois.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The building was built in 1900 as a photography studio. Prominent Quincy architect Ernest M. Wood designed the building in the Tudor Revival style. The building is representative of Woods early works, before his style became influenced by Frank Lloyd Wrights work; it can be contrasted with Wood&#39;s own office, a Prairie School building of similar size which Wood designed twelve years later. Significant Tudor elements of the building include its half-timbered gable on the second floor, steep gable roof, and decorative interior woodwork.</p><br>
<p>The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 9, 1984.</p><br>
<p>Meadowbrook Run  is a tributary of Ithan Creek in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. It is approximately 1.9 mi long and flows through Radnor Township and Haverford Township.</p><br>
<h2>Course</h2><br>
<p>Meadowbrook Run begins just south of Conestoga Road near the community of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. It flows southwest for several tenths of a mile before receiving its first tributary, Finn Run, from the left. Shortly thereafter, it begins to parallel Bryn Mawr Avenue and flows into a small pond where it receives Valley Run from the right. Several hundred feet later, it receives Doom Run from the left. Meadowbrook Run then passes under Bryn Mawr Avenue and meets with a small unnamed tributary. The creek flows into Haverford Township, passes under Interstate 476, and reaches its confluence with Ithan Creek.</p><br>
<p>Meadowbrook Run joins Ithan Creek 0.30 mi upriver of its mouth.</p><br>
<h2>Geography and geology</h2><br>
<p>The elevation near the mouth of Meadowbrook Run is 200 ft above sea level. The elevation of the creek&#39;s source is between 340 and above sea level.</p><br>
<h2>Watershed</h2><br>
<p>The watershed of Meadowbrook Run has an area of 2.37 square miles. Meadowbrook Run periodically floods during large storm events. The stream is not considered to be impaired.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Meadowbrook Run was entered into the Geographic Names Information System on August 2, 1979. Its identifier in the Geographic Names Information System is 1180837.</p><br>
<p>The Bridge in Radnor Township No. 2 is a brick and concrete arch bridge that spans Meadowbrook Run. It was built in 1905 and has a length of 75 ft. The bridge is on the National Register of Historic Places.</p><br>
<p>In 1986, a development was built on the Willing tract in the Meadowbrook Run watershed. It received local opposition due to the potential of flooding in Meadowbrook Run. However, engineer Theodore J. Gacomis said there would be no runoff problems due to the construction of a retention basin that would release water into the stream at a controlled rate.</p><br>
<p>The Dennysville Historic District encompasses the historic town center of Dennysville, Maine. Located near the southern end of the large rural community, its architecture covers more than 100 years of community history, from the early 19th to early 20th centuries. The district extends along Main Street between Maine State Route 86 and Bunker Hill Road, on the west bank of the Dennys River. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The town of Dennysville was established in 1784 by General Benjamin Lincoln, a veteran of the American Revolutionary War, and its settlement was overseen by his son Theodore. The town center grew on the banks of the Dennys River, which provided the power to bring the area&#39;s timber to mills and market. The town was economically successful in the lumber industry until virgin timber in the region was exhausted, and the main lumber mill in town burned in the 1930s.</p><br>
<p>The town center is a largely linear area, lining the west side of Main Street, which parallels the river south of State Route 86 (King Street). It extends south just beyond the Bunker Hill Road bridge across the river, and along The Lane and Mahars Lane west to their junction. This area includes 22 historically significant properties on about 30 acre of land. Most prominent among these properties are the civic buildings and the church, an 1834 Federal-Greek Revival structure built in 1834, which retains its original box pews. The town library, built in 1923, is one of the newest buildings in the district, a distinctive Bungalow-style structure with a stuccoed brick exterior. The Dennysville Academy building is a fine Greek Revival structure built in 1846 and used in later years as a church vestry. Other non-residential buildings include the American Legion Hall (c. 1885), formerly a Masonic lodge, and Allans Stage and Livery Stable, a horse barn dating to about 1875.</p><br>
<p>Most of the houses in the district were built before 1850, and are either Federal or Greek Revival in style. They are typically 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 stories in height, of wood frame construction, and finished with wooden clapboards. One house, built about 1860, is notable for its Italianate style. One Federal style house, that of Captain Ebenezer Wilder, was built in 1834, but has later Queen Anne/Eastlake styling applied. There are two mid-20th century houses that are not historically significant.</p><br>
<p>The Old Grist Mill is a historic mill building on Little River Road in eastern Lebanon, Maine. Built in 1774, it is the town&#39;s oldest surviving industrial building, and was in operation as a mill into the 20th century. The building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, has been converted into a residence and retail/artist space.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The Old Grist Mill is located on the south side of the Little River, in a rural eastern part of Lebanon. It is a 2-1/2 story wood frame structure, with a gable roof and a massive stone foundation that has been reinforced with concrete. Its framing members are hand-hewn timbers, about 13 in square and as much as 22 ft in length. A small single room extends beyond the foundation over the river.</p><br>
<p>The mill was built in 1774 by Joseph Hardison. Originally built as a grist (flour) mill, it was over time adapted to also to produce wooden shingles and clapboarding. The mill also served as a community meeting point, housing a small store and as a place for posting public notices. The advent of railroad transportation and the decline in farming in the area led to its closure in the 1870s. It underwent a restoration in the 1970s, using electricity instead of water as its power source, but has since been converted into residential space with room for a small shop or artist&#39;s studio.</p><br>
<p>Just downstream from the mill, the Little River Road crosses the river on the Grist Mill Bridge, whose foundation may also have been built by Henderson.</p><br>
<p>Boulder-on-the Park is the name of a three-story building at 1850 South Boulder Avenue in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Originally built in 1923, it represents Commercial Style Art Deco architecture, It was designed by the Atkinson & Olston architectural firm and built by C. A. Sanderson & Son. The building overlooks Veterans Park, south of Downtown Tulsa.</p><br>
<p>The building has served several different functions. Upon completion, it housed the Holland Hall School, and bore the name of the school until 1932, when the school moved to new and larger premises, the Boulder building housed corporate offices, particularly the Aero Exploration Company, an aerial mapping company, which occupied it from 1938 to 1946. The building was extensively remodeled in 1947, then occupied by radio station KTUL. The station coined the name "Boulder on the Park" for its new premises. It remained in the building until 1956, when it moved to new facilities on Lookout Mountain and converted to a television station, KTUL-TV.</p><br>
<h2>Addition to NRHP</h2><br>
<p>Boulder on the Park was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 2003, under Criteria A. Its NRIS number is 03000872.</p><br>
<p>Although the building has been extensively remodeled since its original construction, its nomination was accepted because of its historical significance as a radio broadcasting station. The Period of Significance is stated as 1947, when KTUL moved into the building, to 1953 (50 years prior to listing on the NRHP).</p><br>
<h2>Original construction</h2><br>
<p>This building faces east, toward Veterans Park. It is three stories high, with a flat roof, brick walls and concrete foundation. Since the property has a significant uphill grade from front to rear, the first floor was excavated into the hillside and is mostly below grade. None of the first floor is visible from the rear. The only entry was a single metal paneled door with a single light. The windows are wood with brick rowlock sills.</p><br>
<p>According to one news report, the school building had an interior area of 8,200 ft&sup2; which contained at least nine classrooms, a shop, gymnasium and a laboratory.</p><br>
<h2>1947 modifications</h2><br>
<p>Before radio station KTUL moved its studio from the National Bamk of Tulsa building (now known as the 320 South Boston Building), its management decided to modernize the appearance. A rear entry was added to the west wall. The brick walls were painted, which emphasized the difference between the more decorative facing brick used on the front (east) and the first quarter of the north and south sides, and the common brick that covered the remainder of the building. Some additional architectural details were added to the facade, which gave the building a more Streamline Moderne appearance.</p><br>
<p>The Stevens Pass Historic District is an area within a large rectangle 3.2by18.2 mi and extends from the Martin Creek Tunnel on the western slope of the crest to the eastern portal of the present Cascade Tunnel above Nason Creek on the eastern slope. The area is ruggedly mountainous and the terrain is covered with timber and granitic outcroppings. The Cascade Range interfered with the Great Northern Railway effort to develop a deep water western terminus in Puget Sound. A gap in the Cascade Range, at Stevens Pass, was found suitable at an elevation slightly in excess of 4,000 ft about 45 mi east of Seattle. The first effort an elaborate switchback system, replaced by a tunnel which was itself replaced by a second tunnel.</p><br>
<h2>Switchbacks</h2><br>
<p>The switchback route complicated and time consuming. Thirteen miles (21.3 km) of track were needed to connect two points three miles apart. Winter snows and slides made the passage slow and not practical for extended use. By 1897, a better route was method was needed to cross the range. A tunnel was begun in 1897, which would by-pass the switchbacks.</p><br>
<h2>First Tunnel</h2><br>
<p>The tunnel as completed in 1900 was 13,283 ft long with a 1.7% grade descending to the west. The eastern portal was at elevation 3,347 ft and the western at elevation 3,123 ft. Both portals have a concrete facing with two pilasters flanking the tunnel mouth and a pyramidal cap. The entire length of the tunnel is lined with concrete.</p><br>
<p>Prior to the Wellington Disaster in 1910, the pass was protected by 17 snow sheds for a total length of 7,593 ft. The structures were added over time, as the need became apparent. The sheds did not block the slides but carried the debris over the right of way. Additions to the snow shed protection totaled construction of 5,411 ft in length, located at 26 points from 29 mi east of the Cascade Tunnel to 9.5 mi west. A double-track reinforced concrete snow shed 3,900 ft long was built in Wellington. Believed to be the first double-track shed built.</p><br>
<p>With the increase in traffic over the line made possible by the improvements, interruptions increased as heavier snows blocked exposed portions of the track. In 1913, the Railway began a series of improvements on the west slope of the Cascade. As a result of these endeavors, eight of the twelve miles of track between the Cascade Tunnel and Scenic were covered by tunnels or snow sheds. Included in this construction was the Windy Point Tunnel, some 1,200 ft long, which permitted the double tracking of the line along an almost vertical cliff. A second tunnel of note in the route was the Martins Creek tunnel, located immediately west of Martin Creek. Tracks approached the tunnel portal on a bridge and the tunnel turned about 170 degrees in a rising curve, the tracks crossing over Martin Creek again on a second bridge. The tunnel, built in 1911, was an unusual solution to a difficult problem and it was aptly called the Horseshoe Tunnel. The snow sheds added during this period were combination structures of wood and concrete. Reinforced or mass concrete was used for the back wall and timber formed the roof and supporting pillars; the largest shed constructed in this series was 4,100 ft long.</p><br>
<p>The maintenance of the sheds was expensive. Electrification of the line began in 1909. A simplified route was needed.</p><br>
<h2>Frank Stevens</h2><br>
<p>Probably no one was so firmly connected with James J. Hill&#39;s route over Stevens Pass than John Frank Stevens, after whom the pass is named. Stevens was born in 1853 and raised on a farm in Maine. Like many engineers of the time, he had no formal education but went to work for the railroad, first surveying in Maine and then moving west, working as a rodman in Minneapolis and a section hand in Texas. Before going to work for Hill in 1889, he had laid out the lines for half a dozen western railroads including the Canadian Pacific. He had gained an enviable reputation by dint of competent hard work and in his travels "he had been treed by wolves, chased by Indians, struck down by Mexican fevers, marooned by blizzards, given up for lost on more than one occasion (and) had developed a robust physique that seemed impervious to climate". The Great Northern was recognized as the best engineered railroad in the country and to Stevens must go much of the credit. In 1905 he was appointed by Theodore Roosevelt as Chief Engineer to the "graveyard of reputations", the Panama Canal, which he pulled out of inaction and placed on the road to completion. He went back to work for Hill in 1909 and then worked as a consulting engineer in New York. In 1917, he was asked by Woodrow Wilson to go to Russia as head of the American Railway Commission; at the request of the Russians, he stayed as an adviser until 1922. In 1927, he was elected president of the American Society of Civil Engineers and in 1937, at the age of 83, he flew to the Panama Canal in a Pan American clipper. He died on June 2, 1943.</p><br>

<p>The East Machias Historic District encompasses the historic early center of the 19th century lumber and shipbuilding center of East Machias, Maine. The district includes houses built between about 1760 and 1880, several churches, and Washington Academy, a private school founded in 1792. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The area that is now East Machias was first settled in the 1760s, and was part of neighboring Machias until 1826. Its principal settlement grew near a falls on the East Machias River, where several mills were established. Washington Academy, founded in 1792, was given a permanent home in East Machias in 1823. The area was an economically successful shipbuilding and lumbering area for most of the 19th century, giving rise to the collection of historic properties on the east bank of the river.</p><br>
<p>The district extends along the eastern bank of the East Machias River, roughly between the bridge carrying United States Route 1 in the north and that carrying Willow Street to the south. It extends inland to include properties on Water Street and Cutler Road (Maine State Route 191). Most of the buildings in the 63 acre district are residential, 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 stories in height, and of wood frame construction with clapboard siding. Notable exceptions including the original Washington Academy building (1823), the First Congregational Church (1836), and the former Church of the Disciples of Christ (1880), now an academy building. There are also two mid-19th century commercial buildings, a schoolhouse from that period, and the archaeological remains of four separate mills.</p><br>
<p>Marathos is a mountain village in the municipality of Malevizi, in the Crete region of Greece. It is about 20 kilometres west of Heraklion. The Marathianos River runs nearby and flows down to Fodele. The village relies mainly on agriculture, livestock and bee keeping.</p><br>
<p>On the main road there is a war monument commemorating the many battles on the island of Crete. It was built by the sculptor Yanni Klinakis.</p><br>
<p>The village has 5 tavernas and a traditional cafeteria.</p><br>
<h2>Doxa cavern</h2><br>
<p>A short distance from the village is the historical cave of Doxa. At the entrance there is a map that shows the cave layout.</p><br>
<h2>Arkaliospilio cavern</h2><br>
<p>At the foot of the mountain is Arkaliospilio cave. A large part of this cave is still unexplored.</p><br>
<p>Preakness Valley Park and Golf Course is located in Wayne Township and Totowa Borough, New Jersey, United States, along Totowa Road  and Riverview Drive . Of the total 377 acres in the park, 298 acres are located in Wayne and 79 are located in Totowa. The park contains a Golf Course, which is a public 36 hole course. Made public in 1931, this full service course is considered the first public golf course in Passaic County. It has a clubhouse, caddy house, practice facilities, and on site maintenance facilities.</p><br>
<p>Also located on the park is Dey Mansion, a historical site famous for being George Washington&#39;s headquarters twice during the American Revolutionary War. The mansion was constructed around 1770, and has been county owned since 1930. NJ Transit Bus Route 197 provides service to this park.</p><br>
<p>Dvergsøya is an island in Kristiansand municipality in Vest-Agder county, Norway. The 0.27 km&sup2; island lies in the archipelago in the Kristiansandsfjorden to the southeast of the city of Kristiansand. The island is used as a recreational area and it has wharfs for visiting boats as well as toilet facilities. Dvergsøya is only accessible by boat. Dvergsøya is best known as the island where the Norwegian Crown Prince Haakon Magnus and Crown Princess Mette-Marit spend their annual summer vacation with their children. However, the island&#39;s fairly dramatic history is less known.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Dvergsøya was originally a smallholding under the mainland farm Dvergsnes. The island was historically used for farming.</p><br>
<h3>Witch</h3><br>
<p>Maren was a smallholders wife from Dvergsøya. She was arrested on 20 April 1670 in connection with the sinking of a ship bound for Jutland. There were several people involved in this case, all women. One of Maren&#39;s "accomplices" explained in court what should have happened. They had flown through the air down to the ship. There they met the devil, disguised as a priest. It was Maren who ensured that the boat sank. Maren denied the story, and was therefore doomed to undergo torture. Under torture, she confirmed the story and was the last witch in Norway to be sentenced to death and burned at the stake. The sentence was executed on 9 September 1670.</p><br>
<h3>Burglary, arson and murder</h3><br>
<p>More recently, in the 20th century, two wealthy men named Jebsen and Vogt from Kristiansand built country houses (villas) on Dvergsøya. Jebsens villa was the scene of an infamous crime. On the night of Easter Sunday in 1933 three men broke into Jebsens villa and then set fire to it afterwards to hide the traces of the burglary. Afterwards, one of the thieves and arsonists tried to break with the other two. As punishment, they killed him by drowning him in a basin and dump him in the Kristiansandsfjorden. Today, the ruins of Jebsen’s villa are still visible.</p><br>
<h3>World War II</h3><br>
<p>The location of Dvergsøya at the entrance to the city of Kristiansand made the island interesting also in a military context. During World War II the German occupants had an anti-aircraft battery to protect the city of Kristiansand. The battery consisted of six fixed anti-aircraft cannons on the southwestern part of the island. Today, the foundations of the cannons are still visible.</p><br>
<h3>Royal visits</h3><br>
<p>Vogt sold his villa. For many years, it was used as a vacation rental house. Crown Princess Mette-Marit is originally from the nearby city of Kristiansand and her family enjoys spending their summer vacations at Vogt’s villa which they rent. Vogt’s villa is designed by Arnstein Arneberg, the same architect that designed the royal residence at Skaugum. In 2009, a rental contract was signed with the municipality of Kristiansand which owns it. A protection fence in the recreational area caused a political debate, but was built in spite of the protests.</p><br>
<p>The Akhshtyrskaya cave  is a notable archeological site in the Western Caucasus. It is located on the right side of Akhshtyrskaya gorge of the Mzymta River near the Adlersky City District of Sochi, Krasnodar Krai, Russia. It was discovered in September 1903 by Edouard Martel and Gabriel Revinko, a resident of the nearby village of Kazachy Brod. The cave is named after the local village of Akhshtyr and the alternative name after the village of Kazachy Brod.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The cave entrance is located about 120 m above the Mzymta river (185 m above sea level) with an eastern exposure. It extends 160 m deep into the rock, first forming a 20 m corridor and then splits into two halls, 10 m and 8 m wide. Further on there is a sharp rise of clay, and two narrow courses coming to a dead end. Near the cave entrance there are two areas connected by a 12 m long corridor.</p><br>
<p>The cave received the status of "a unique monument of prehistoric architecture" in 1978, the entrance to the cave was closed, and the hallway blocked by iron bars. In 1999 the cave became accessible to the public and is equipped with artificial lighting, stairs and steps.</p><br>
<h2>Discovery and Excavations</h2><br>
<p>The Akhshtyrskaya cave was discovered in September 1903 by Édouard-Alfred Martel and Gabriel Revinko, a resident of the nearby village of Kazachy Brod. In 1936, archaeologist Sergei Nikolayevich Zamyatin excavated the first prehistoric human remains. From 1961 to 1965 excavations resumed by archaeologists MZ Panichkina and EA Vekilova. The stratigraphic sequence is about 5 meters thick and ranges from the Middle Paleolithic era to the early Medieval period. More recent excavations occurred from 1999 until 2008. In total, more than 6,000 bones were found - 92% of which belonged to the cave bear. In addition, there are the remains of deer, bison, goats, wolves, foxes and other animals. Humans - Neanderthals settled in the cave about 70,000 years ago. After a break of about 20,000 years the cave was populated by Cro-Magnon humans between 30,000 and 35,000 years ago.</p><br>

Black spots inside the levels of the cave may be the result of fire usage for cooking and warming. Scientists also found tools: knives, spears and axes.</p><br>

<p>Emblance Downs stone circles are a pair of stone circles located in the parish of St. Breward on Bodmin Moor in Cornwall, UK.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The two ruined stone circles are situated between King Arthur&#39;s Downs and Emblance Downs, on Bodmin Moor. They lie close together separated by just 2.5 metres and both have diameters of about 23 metres. The circles had a very irregular spacing of stones, and each ring has an exceptionally large stone to the southeast.</p><br>
<p>The western circle is better preserved with six upright and two fallen stones on the perimeter, with the one in the southeast being 1.6m long. Another two fallen and perhaps displaced stones are near the centre of the circle. There may have been about 15 stones originally.</p><br>
<p>The eastern circle has eight surviving stones, with four upright stones and one fallen stone on the perimeter. There are two slabs lying outside the circle, and within the circle there is a long slab (3.3 metres) in the southeast quadrant.</p><br>
<p>The remains of another stone circle known as Leaze stone circle can be found about 300 metres to the southeast. Around 500 metres in a west by north-west direction lies the enigmatic enclosure known as King Arthur&#39;s Hall.</p><br>
<p>Dervent Heights  are a hilly ridge in Yambol Province in south-eastern Bulgaria  and European Turkey .</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>Dervent Heights span 50 km from west to east and 45 km from north to south. Dervent Heights are situated between the Srem gorge of the river Tundzha in the west to the valleys of the rivers Popovska and Chengerligere in the east which separate them from the Strandzha mountain. To the north and the south the heights reach the plains of Elhovo and Edirne. The border between Bulgaria and Turkey follows the main crest of the heights.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>The crest is flat and slightly hilly reaching an altitude of 300-450 m with rounded peaks, the highest being Gyurgenbair (555 m), situated in Bulgarian territory at 2 km to the south-west of the village of Kraynovo. Dervent Heights are formed mainly by limestone and granite. There are small deposits of iron and copper ore. There are more than 30 karst caves in the Bulgarian section. The climate is Mediterranean. Several rivers have their source in the heights, including Popovska, Arapliyska and Pravadere (tributaries of the Tundzha in Bulgaria), and Tatardere, Havsadere and Chengerdere (tributaries of the Ergene in Turkey). Large areas of the crest and the slopes are covered with deciduous forests and pastures. The region is inhabited by 120 bird species, of them 25 are included in the Red Book of Bulgaria. Dervent heights are included in the European Union network of nature protection areas Natura 2000.</p><br>
<h2>Settlements</h2><br>
<p>In the Bulgarian part of the Dervent Heights to the north there are 20 villages: Chernozem, Golyan Dervent, Granitovo, Zlatinitsa, Kraynovo, Lalkovo, Lesovo, Malko Kirilovo, Malko Sharkovo, Malomirovo, Mamarchevo, Melnitsa, Razdel, Sharkovo, Sitovo, Slaveykovo, Srem, Voden, Valcha Polyana and Zlatinitsa.</p><br>
<p>On Turkish territory in the south there is one town, Lalapaşa, and 20 villages.</p><br>
<p>The Cave of the Lakes is located near the village Kastria in the Achaea regional unit. It is 17 km from Kalavryta and 9 km from Kleitoria.</p><br>
<p>It was formally known as Troupisio.</p><br>
<p>The cave is an old subterranean river consisting of three levels. During the winter when the snow melts it is transformed into a flowing river with waterfalls. During the summer, it dries up, leaving behind 13 lakes.</p><br>
<h2>Legend</h2><br>
<p>It is mentioned in the writings of the ancient traveller Pausanias.</p><br>
<p>According to Greek legend, it was in this cave that Melampus cured the two of the three daughters of Proetus, king of Tiryns, Lysippe and Iphianassa. The third daughter, Iphinoe, had died on the way.</p><br>
<h2>Scientific</h2><br>
<p>Humans started using the cave during the Neolithic Age. It was in continued use throughout the duration of the Bronze Age.</p><br>
<p>It presents significant paleontological and archaeological interests. On the lower level of the cave were found fossilized human bones and various animals including hippopotamus.</p><br>
<p>Carver Memorial Library is the public library of Searsport, Maine. It is located at 12 Union Street in the town center, in a 1910 Tudor Revival building donated in memory of Captain George A. Carver, a Searsport native. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.</p><br>
<h2>Architecture and history</h2><br>
<p>Carver Memorial Library is set at the northeast corner of Union and Mortland Streets in the village center of Searsport, about one block east of the town offices, and one block north of United States Route 1. It is a single story fieldstone structure, three bays wide, with a gabled roof and a projecting central gabled pavilion. The gable ends are decorated in Tudor style half-timbering. The main entrance is set at the center of the projection in a segmented-arch opening, with large Craftsman-style brackets supporting the half-timbered gable above. The interior has retained most of its original finishes, including marble floors, oak shelving and desks, and black marble fireplaces in the reading areas.</p><br>
<p>The public library in Searsport was founded in 1871, with its collection started with donations from David Sears and a private lending library that had previously existed in the town. By 1900 its collection had exceeded 2,000 volumes. This building, designed by the firm of McLean and Wright, was built in 1910. It was a gift to the town by Mrs. George Carver and her son Amos, in honor of her husband, a Searsport native, shipbuilder and ship&#39;s captain.</p><br>
<p>The Old Town House is the town hall of Parsonsfield, Maine. Located on Merrill Hill Road, the 1834 Greek Revival building has served as the town&#39;s main civic building for more than 150 years. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The Old Town House is located on the east side of Merrill Hill Road, at the northern fringe of the rural village center of Parsonsfield. It is a 1-1/2 story wood frame structure, with a front-facing gable roof, clapboard siding, and a granite foundation. Oriented facing south (with the gable ridge parallel to the road), its front facade is symmetrical, with a pair of entrances, each flanked by pilasters and topped by an entablature. The building corners are also pilastered. There are three sash windows set around the entrances on the ground floor, and two more in the attic level. The interior, originally a single large space, has retained original wide pine wainscoting and plaster walls. Portions of the interior have been partitioned off to house town offices, and part of the attic level has also been finished for that purpose.</p><br>
<p>When Parsonsfield was first incorporated in 1771, town meetings were held in local residences. In 1794 the town built a meeting house on the west side of Merrill Hill Road, which was used for both civic and religious purposes. The present building was erected after that building was made over exclusively for church use. The building was used for town meetings until 1985, but still houses town offices and is used as a polling station.</p><br>
<p>Ira Allen Chapel is a building on the campus of the University of Vermont , which is located on the northwest corner of the "University Green" in Burlington, Vermont . The building was constructed during 1925–26,The History of University of Vermont Buildings: 1800–</p><br>
<p>1947 and dedicated on January 14, 1927. It was added to National Register of Historic Places as part of University Green Historic District on April 14, 1975.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Ira Allen Chapel was named after the University of Vermont&#39;s founder, Ira Allen. Construction of the building was made possible by a $200,000 endowment from James Benjamin Wilbur, LL. D (1856–1929) of Manchester, VT in 1924.</p><br>
<h3>Construction</h3><br>
<p>The cornerstone of the Ira Allen Chapel was installed on June 22, 1925 as part of the commencement activities that year. An inscription which was carved into the granite reads; "Dedicated to the service of God erected in memory of the founder of this university Ira Allen - 1925".</p><br>
<p>The building was designed by the architect William Mitchell Kendall of McKim, Mead, and White of New York; the same architectural firm which designed the university&#39;s Waterman Building (built in 1941), Fleming Museum (1931), Southwick Building (1934), Slade Hall (1928), as well as Burlington City Hall (1928). The building was erected under the supervision of builder, O.S. Nichols (of Essex Junction, VT).</p><br>
<p>Angell Hall (or the Angell House), originally built in 1869 to serve as the Presidents house (and later converted into a Womens dormitory in 1917) was demolished to make way for construction of the chapel.</p><br>
<p>In May 1926, the chapel&#39;s 2,063 lb bell, manufactured by the McShane Bell Foundry Company, Inc. of Baltimore, Maryland was installed in the belfry (for the total cost of $1,685).</p><br>
<p>During the construction of the chapels tower, rumors had been circulated that it was unstable. After some investigation engineers reported that the towers structure was more than sufficient, explaining that the tower&#39;s interior corner wooden columns and their connecting castings over the top of the open arches were filled with reinforced concrete.</p><br>
<h3>James B. Wilbur: Benefactor</h3><br>
<p>James Benjamin Wilbur was a wealthy businessman and American history enthusiast who had made his fortune in ranching and banking in Colorado, and serving as president of the Royal Trust Company of Chicago until his retirement and move to Vermont in 1909. In this time Wilbur discovered and developed keen intrigue in the historically controversial character of Ira Allen, subsequently resolving that it was "a sacred duty to undertake the writing of his life." By 1920, Wilburs collection of "Vermontiana" assisted him to begin writing Allens biography, which was eventually published in 1928 as a two-volume work entitled: "Ira Allen: Founder of Vermont, 1751–1814".</p><br>
<p>In 1921, Wilbur first donated to the university a bronze statue monument of Ira Allen (sculpted by Sherry Edmundson Fry) upon a foundation of Barre Granite that was installed on the University Green in front of the university&#39;s "Old Mill" building facing west toward College St. and Lake Champlain. The monument to General Lafayette, which was originally installed at this location in 1883 was moved to the north end of "the Green" (in proximity to where the Ira Allen Chapel stands today).</p><br>
<p>In 1924, Wilbur proposed an offer to the UVM Board of Trustees to build a chapel on conditions; that it be named the "Ira Allen Chapel", and that the chapel be sited and designed by the University&#39;s consulting architects at the time; McKim, Mead & White of New York City.</p><br>
<p>By 1929, Wilbur had also established a $3m endowment scholarship for the University (which still exists today), and donated his personal Vermontiana collection to the university; Today known as the Wilbur Collection, as well as a $100,000 provisional contribution for the construction of the Robert Hull Fleming Museum, and an additional $150,000 to construct the Wilbur room within the museum intended to house his collection. Up until this point in time he had become the largest private benefactor in the universitys history. An ironic twist of fate lies in the fact that Ira Allen had left behind a damaged reputation with the university, having never followed up on his founding pledge of 4,000 pounds that was intended for the construction of the universitys buildings. However, Wilburs ineffable devotion to Allen over a century later suggests that compensation was made for his fiduciary lapses, at least within the context of the universitys history.</p><br>
<p>During the years of Wilburs contributions, university president Guy Winfred Bailey (1876-1940) served as Wilburs principal handler.</p><br>
<h3>Pipe organ</h3><br>
<p>The original organ installed in the Ira Allen Chapel was a three-manual, electro-pneumatic Welte-Mignon Philharmonic Pipe Organ. The manual compass was CC to C4 (61 notes). The pedal compass was CCC to G (32 notes). The wind chests of the manuals featured superoctave couplers (4&#39;), which extended the compass of the keyboards to 73 notes. There was also installed a reproducing console, which played recorded rolls in detail utilizing pedals, swells, and tempo characteristics of renown organists.</p><br>
<p>During the chapels dedication ceremony of 14 January 1927, the organ was played by Dr. T. Tertius Noble, the organist of St. Thomas Church of New York, who concluded the event with two organ recitals composed of classical pieces, and an original piece that was said to have demonstrated the capabilities of the instrument.</p><br>
<p>In 1985, the pipe organ was removed due to building renovations requiring the installation of a new airshaft in place of the organs pipes. The installation of a new pipe organ was estimated to cost in the millions of dollars, and was further anticipated to have complications due to the effect of varying temperature and humidity on the organs intonation system. The prospect was thus determined to be cost-prohibitive. However, in August 2004, a new Rogers Trillium 3 digital electronic organ was installed (costing about $100,000). Organ enthusiasts have argued against the authenticity of the digitally re-created pipe organ sound.</p><br>
<h3>The University's desire for a new Chapel</h3><br>
<p>Chapel services on the university&#39;s campus from the 1830s onward were held in the chapel of the Main College building underneath its formerly erected central dome, in what is today is known as the John Dewey Lounge. Although the chapel was enlarged during the 1882–83 modernization and renovation of the Main College building, throughout the ensuing 45 years the student population continued to grow beyond its capacity. Furthermore, the inadequate heating system of the facility could not sufficiently heat the room for an "8:00 or 8:30 am service", which up to that point in time was a compulsory obligation.</p><br>
<p>By the early 1900s, attendance at the chapel services had become greatly reduced much to the dismay of the sitting university president of the day, Matthew Henry Buckham. Although the president was said to have hated the word "compulsory", he nevertheless felt that everyone should attend chapel services. However, this was impossible due to the chapel&#39;s limited capacity. a new chapel.</p><br>
<p>Soon after Buckham&#39;s passing in November 1910, it was reported in a university periodical that a memorial to Matthew Henry Buckham ought take the shape of a chapel; "It would be fitting, however, if in the coming years there shall be erected by the side of Morrill Hall, commemorating the service of a son of Vermont whom he loved, a memorial chapel bearing his name..."</p><br>
<p>Although this vision was never realized, fate eventually played out that the Ira Allen Chapel was to be built on the same spot where for almost 40 years, president Buckham had lived and worked (i.e. Angell House). By the time of Ira Allen Chapel&#39;s design, it was intended that it serve as a meeting place to accommodate the entire student body, using reported figures from 1923 totaling 1146 students.</p><br>
<h2>Architecture</h2><br>
<p>The building&#39;s footprint was constructed in the shape of a Latin cross. There is a 170 ft. high (by 20 ft) bell tower offset to the northwest corner of the nave of the main structure that is fitted with four clocks (one for each side of the tower) measuring eight feet in diameter. At night, the beams from the electric lamp on the top tier of the tower are said to be visible from Mt. Mansfield to the east (the highest summit in Vermont) to Mt. Marcy from the west (the highest summit in the Adirondack mountains of New York State).</p><br>
<p>The length of the nave runs roughly east-west for 135 ft. at a 50 ft. width. The 46 foot wide transepts of "the cross" extend perpendicular from the nave structure (i.e. north-south) for 20&#39; 6". Hence, the width of the main structure totals about 90 ft. The floor area of the building is 39,141 ft (gross area) and 26,532 ft (finished area). The main structure is 40 ft. high and has a slate roof. Extending an additional 40 ft. above the roof and from the center of the building (e.g. the intersection of the nave and the transepts) is a low hexagonal dome topped with a lantern and golden cupola.</p><br>
<p>The building was built using locally manufactured brick laid in English bond with ivory colored trim. The face of the main structure was fashioned in Greek Revival style with a portico installed with six 32 ft. Ionic columns. The portico&#39;s pediment has a central traced elliptical window and flanking white swags. Barre granite steps (roughly the width of the nave) ascend to the front entrance, which consists of three large doors leading to the inner vestibule. The auditorium seats about 1,100 people, including 200 in the balconies.</p><br>
<p>The eastern facade of the building has a basement level which is five bays wide.</p><br>
<h2>Additions and maintenance</h2><br>
<p>In 1945, the "Little Chapel" was constructed in the basement underneath the southern transept. It was considered to be an architectural unit complete with cathedral glass, beamed ceiling, chancel floor, and leaded windows. During 1954-55, the "Little Chapel" was renovated through the efforts of the Rev. Raymond A. Hall (a faculty member of the English department who was made the university chaplain in 1952) and with contributions from Mrs. and Mr. John E. Booth (who were primary contributors for the little chapel in 1945). It was upgraded with a dossal, brass altar set, and a new lectern. The chapel was built in cruciform with stained glass windows through which artificial light was cast. With a seating capacity for about 40 people, the facility served as a worship center for numerous groups on campus. However, on October 19, 1957, the UVM Board of Trustees voted to discontinue weekly chapel services held each Wednesday and replaced them with a weekly university convocation. The decision was reached after a legal investigation concluded that such use of university facilities was technically a violation of the 3rd amendment of the Constitution of Vermont, which held that "... no man ought to, or of right can be compelled to attend any religious worship, or erect or support any place of worship, or maintain any minister, contrary to the dictates of his conscience..."</p><br>
<p>Due to the fact that UVM received funds from the State of Vermont as a state university, the use of tax dollars for support of religious services could have been construed as compelling the taxpayers to support a place of worship. The Trustees further concluded that the primary use of the university&#39;s facilities ought to be for educational purposes with the allowance for denominational groups to utilize available facilities for worship services on campus provided they are billed for associated costs, such as; heat, lighting, custodial services, and depreciation.</p><br>
<p>On October 17, 1953, an electronic (Maas–Rowe) symphonic-carillon was dedicated in the Ira Allen Chapel. It was the first such carillon with the capability for tuning in both major and minor tonality, and which allowed for the Carillonneur to vary the tonal coloring according to harmonic requirements. Up to this point, electronic carillons could only be tuned to one tonality, thus preventing their bells from sounding in tune at all times. The device consisted of eight large speakers mounted above the bells in the tower, a console with two manuals and 64 bells at the base of the tower, and four 50 watt amplifiers housed in the basement. The $5,000 instrument</p><br>
<p>While making major repairs to the chapel in 1954, a group of workers were trapped within the tower for four hours due to high winds that prevented their climbing down.</p><br>
<p>In June 1966, the outside of the chapel and bell tower were repainted and a new gold leaf was applied over the tower dome cupola; a project which had cost $6,000.</p><br>
<p>During 1971, renovations were made to the interior, which included extensive acoustical remodeling, enlargement of the stage area, and the addition of new seating (at an estimated cost of $500,000).</p><br>
<p>In 1972, the urn containing the ashes of Burlington native and world-renowned American philosopher and educational reformer John Dewey (UVM class of 1879), as well as the remains of his wife, Roberta Dewey were interred at a memorial adjacent to the north side of the building. This is the only known grave site on the UVM campus.</p><br>
<p>In 1981, one of the original cornices had rotted out to about 25% of its original material. It required Moose Creek Restoration a month to recreate the carved edifice in plaster and epoxy coating (weighing 200 pounds).</p><br>
<p>In early 1982, each of the four of the clocks on the tower had been displaying different times. The University commissioned Pat Boyden (UVM class of 1967) to rebuild the clock mechanism and replace the clock hands with a lighter aluminum material. Boyden further donated new hour and minute markings for the clocks.</p><br>
<p>During 1984-86, major improvements totaling 30,000 square feet were made to the Ira Allen Chapel and Billings Library building, forming a combined Ira Allen–Billings Student Center. A wing was constructed abutting the south transept of the Ira Allen Chapel at the basement level. The roof of the wing serves as a patio adjoining the chapel to Billings. An additional building known as the Campus Center Theatre was constructed, which abuts part of the north transept of the Chapel. The back entrance of the theatre is accessible from the rear vestibule of Ira Allen Chapel. The roof of the entryway serves as an open terrace and also connects the two buildings together. It is accessible from the back of the auditorium (i.e. the first floor) of Ira Allen Chapel and from stairways from the east, and the north. The front entrance of the Campus Center Theatre faces north toward Colchester Avenue. These additions were designed by the architectural firm Shepley, Bulfinch, Richardson, and Abbott.</p><br>
<p>Subsequently, the basement of the Ira Allen Chapel was converted into a production area for the Vermont Cynic newspaper, the Aerial yearbook, and the Burlington Review publication. The chapel was further outfitted with theatrical lighting, an enlarged stage area, and additional fire exits. Also during this period, a new carillon was installed, replacing the 1953 instrument. The new instrument had a range of almost four full octaves which were played from a two-tiered keyboard located in the chapel’s choir loft.</p><br>
<p>In 1990, an extensive rehabilitation project of the bell tower took place, which consisted of stabilization and repainting of the tower and the belfry.</p><br>
<p>Although Ira Allen Chapel is no longer used for regular religious services, the facility hosts special campus events and ceremonies and has further been visited by many world-renowned speakers.</p><br>

<p>The Parsons–Piper–Lord–Roy Farm is a historic farmstead at 309 Cramm Road in Parsonsfield, Maine. Its buildings dating to 1844, it is a fine example of a well-preserved mid-19th century farmstead, with modifications in the 20th century to adapt the barn to chicken farming. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The Parsons–Piper–Lord–Roy Farm is a 26 acre rural agricultural property in southeastern Parsonsfield. The property consists of parcels of land on the north and south sides of Cramm Road, just east of its junction with Fenderson Road. Much of the property is wooded, some of that formerly agricultural land that has returned to forestation. The farmstead stands on the north side of Cramm Road, with three buildings arranged in a U shape around a central drive. The house, on the west side, is a 1-1/2 story Cape style wood frame structure, with a side gable roof and central front cross gable, with a 1-1/2 story ell extending to the rear to join to an attached carriage barn. The house has Greek Revival styling, its entrance flanked by sidelight windows and pilasters, and topped by an entablature with cornice.</p><br>
<p>At the top of the U stands the main barn, a large two-story bank barn with the gable oriented east-west. Its main entrance is on the west side, with a large sliding door topped by a two-tier transom window and a gabled Greek Revival entablature. Originally built to house large animals in stalls flanking a central drive, it has been converted into a chicken barn, with the loft space floored over for a usable third-floor space. The east side of the U has a rectangular structure now used as an equipment shed.</p><br>
<p>The buildings of the farmstead were built in 1844 by John Merrill, a local builder, for Enoch Parson (a descendant of Thomas Parson for whom the town is named) at the time of his daughter Hannah&#39;s marriage to Dan Piper. The Pipers and Parsons shared ownership of the entire farm property (which was originally about 1,000 acre). A later Parson descendant married into the Lord family, and were the last of that family line to own the property, which was sold in 1948 by their heirs to the Roy family. The Roys were responsible for the conversion of the farm to a chicken-raising operation.</p><br>
<p>Sawa lake  is an Endorheic basin located in the Iraqi governorate of Muthanna near to the Euphrates River, some 23 km to the west of Al-Samawa city. This lake has no inlet or outlet but, it feeds water from The Euphrates River through a system of joint cracks and fissures which transport water to aquifers beneath it. water&#39;s level fluctuates during dry and wet seasons. Water does not dry up because of the equilibrium state between water feed and evaporation.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>Lake Sawa is a unique body of water in Iraq since characterized by highest salinity value among Iraqi inland bodies water. The lake has longitudinal shape with 4.47 km, long and 1.77 km wide.The water level in the lake is one of the manifestations of the lake, which gives something of aesthetic and strangeness. Strangeness reflected the fact that the water level in the lake is higher than the adjacent land around the lake by 1–4 meters. Add to that, the water level of the lake is also higher than the water level of the Euphrates River by 5–7 meters which flow near the lake to the east side and the Shat Al-Arab and Persian Gulf by 17–20 m. A formations of gypsum are surrounding the lake, in some cases these a gypsum formations reach 6 m tall. They are formed due to evaporation of salty water and sedimentation of salt in shallow banks of lake. A formations of gypsum works as a dam prevent water flow from the lake on surrounding areas.</p><br>
<h2>Climate</h2><br>
<p>Sawa lake is characterized by arid climate. Highest and lowest temperatures are ranges between (27.6– 44.6) °C. Mean annual rainfall is 110 mm per year, highest values of evaporation occur during July (506 mm) while lowest values occurring in January (89 mm). Overall wind direction is a North-West with speed of 4.1 m/s.</p><br>
<h2>Flora and fauna</h2><br>
<p>Because of its saline water, no plants grow in the lake or on its shores. Fish and algae are the most important aquatic organisms. One kind of fish lives in Sawa lake, the Arabian toothcarp of the genus Aphanius, Cyprinodontidatae family, characterized by its soft appearance, small size (they do not exceed 10 cm), and eyes that quickly disappear after death. Also there are Pomatiopsis tryon which is Gastropoda genus and lives in brackish water from Oligocene age to recent times, particularly on the lake bottom.</p><br>
<p>Unlike scarce aquatic organisms, Sawa lake rich with birds, 25 species of resident and immigrant birds were observed in Sawa Lake and the surrounding areas. the lake held large numbers of waterfowl, mainly ducks and coot (Fulica atra). The endemic race of little grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis iraquensis) and the Mesopotamian crow (Corvus cornix capellanus) occur, as well as the near-endemic grey hypocolius. Locals and hunters reported the frequent occurrence of “different kinds of raptors” especially in spring and autumn, so the site may be important as a staging area.</p><br>
<p>The desert area on the western side of the lake, the fresh wetland strip (represented by the western branch of Euphrates River including the orchards), and the flat arid/semi-desert areas over the southern parts of the lake might harbor considerable wildlife diversity, mammals present include Rüppell&#39;s fox, striped hyena (near-threatened), honey badger, and Indian gray mongoose (Herpestes edwardsii). Reptiles found included: Water snake (maybe Natrix tessellata).</p><br>
<h2>Environmental Concerns</h2><br>
<p>As Sawa Lake represents a unique, closed water body in Iraq it is an important site to protect for its scientific, educational and biodiversity value. Only human intrusion was considered a high threat because Sawa Lake is the only water body available for the city of Samawa and its surroundings. It is a popular picnic area but this has caused a great deal of garbage accumulation everywhere around the lake. There appears to be no effort by visitors or government to manage or remove garbage from the site. Because there is no plant cover on the lake (reed beds, etc.),</p><br>
<p>water birds have few places to shelter from visitors or hunters. Three threats were classified as ‘high’:urban expansion (the team was informed that the lake area was submitted for an investment project which might involve new construction around the lake); hunting, primarily represented by fishing (mainly netting) and hunting of birds, and pollution caused by the frequent visitors. Other threats (agriculture, resource extraction, transportation & service corridors, and natural systems modification) were considered ‘low’.</p><br>
<p>Waverly Village Hall is a municipal event hall in Waverly, Minnesota, United States, built by the Works Progress Administration  from 1939 to 1940. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002 for its local significance in the themes of architecture, entertainment/recreation, and government/politics. It was nominated as a representative of the civic facilities made possible with New Deal federal assistance, as well as for its Moderne architecture and role as a community event space.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>Waverly Village Hall is a rectangular building with a projecting entrance bay. It is constructed of reinforced concrete whose outermost layer was scored to form rectangular panels. A wide set of stairs leads up to three slightly recessed doorways at the main entrance. These were originally double doors flanked by Moderne light fixtures, but have been replaced with single doors and contemporary lights. Lined up above each doorway is a textured panel surrounding a small window. The corners of the main section and the entrance bay are rounded and topped with decorative fins. The sides of the main section feature three tall windows flanked by texturing similar to the front façade.</p><br>
<p>The main entrances lead to a foyer with a ticket booth flanked by doorways leading to the auditorium. Floored in maple, the auditorium measures 77 by. Recessed into the far wall is a 43 by stage. Short hallways lead to rest rooms, dressing rooms, and rear exits. A lower level contains a large dining hall, kitchen, coat rooms, a locker room, and utility areas.</p><br>
<h2>Origin</h2><br>
<p>Waverlys original 1893 village hall, which housed the communitys government offices, fire department, jail, and ballroom, was gutted by a fire in 1938. In the midst of the Great Depression the village did not have the funds to build a new facility. During this period, however the federal government was sponsoring numerous programs to assist local communities with construction projects that would also create jobs for the unemployed.</p><br>
<p>Waverly officials applied to the district office of the Works Progress Administration in January 1939. Their submission included preliminary plans by Minneapolis-based architect Walter R. Dennis, and the village had secured a site at a prominent intersection. The application was approved by the national office in March. In addition to construction of the new building, the application also provided for cleanup of the old village hall site and remodeling of a separate building recently purchased to be the new fire station.</p><br>
<p>Construction began later in 1939 and was completed in August 1940. The building was dedicated over Labor Day weekend in a festival that included band performances, baseball games, carnival rides, tours, and a dance in the auditorium.</p><br>
<h2>Use</h2><br>
<p>Waverly Village Hall was designed exclusively as an event venue—government offices and services were housed in other buildings secured shortly after the village&#39;s original hall was destroyed by a fire. The replacement hall quickly became a center of social life for residents of Waverly and neighboring towns. It hosted numerous wedding receptions, as well as dances, school plays, banquets, and concerts. Waverly resident Hubert Humphrey gave numerous speeches there. The hall was booked by churches and organizations like the Knights of Columbus, and even hosted athletic events such as basketball games and roller skating.</p><br>
<p>The hall is still operated by the city of Waverly as an event venue.</p><br>
<p>The Igwisi Hills are a volcanic field in Tanzania. Three tuff cones are found there, one of which is associated with a lava flow. They are one of the few locations of possibly kimberlitic lava flows on Earth.</p><br>
<p>The volcanoes are located in the middle of the Tanzania craton, away from other Tanzanian volcanoes. There have been prior episodes of kimberlitic volcanism in the craton, however.</p><br>
<p>The age of the Igwisi Hills is poorly known but may be early Holocene-late Pleistocene in age. Some rainfall-induced chemical modification is found, and the hills have a unique vegetation profile.</p><br>
<h2>Geology</h2><br>
<p>The Igwisi hills are formed by three tuff cones formed in the middle of the Tanzania craton. They are 70 m above the landscape with a karst morphology and craters covered with grass, on a low ridge that may be the product of early eruptive stages. The northeastern hill has two craters, one with a breach from which a 500 m long lava flow originates, probably formed when a lava lake in the crater escaped through a breach. The central volcano has a lava coulee and a tephra cone in its crater. Craters have diameters of 200 -. The total volume of these cones is less than 0.001 km3. Weak pyroclastic activity probably accompanied the eruptive activity. Presumably, low intensity explosive activity built the cones, starting from the northeast cone and ending with the southwest cone. Afterwards, lava flows were generated.</p><br>
<p>The Igwisi Hills are the only places in the world where possible kimberlite lava flows have been found, in form of calcite-olivine lavas. Kimberlite tuffs are also found, a rare species which is very susceptible to erosion. True kimberlites are usually very old eruptive rocks, consequently any subsurface volcanic structure has long since been eroded away. These kimberlites were erupted in a fairly nonexplosive fashion. Not all researchers agree that these lavas are kimberlites, however, with the low alkali content being cited as a difference although the Benfontein "kimberlites" share this property with the Igwisi hills ones. If the Igwisi Hills aren&#39;t true kimberlites, the next youngest would be the 32.3 ± 2.2 Ma Kundelungu plateau pipes in the Democratic Republic of Congo.</p><br>
<p>These kimberlites are also the youngest kimberlites in the world by over thirty million years, cosmogenic helium-3 dates of olivine indicates they were erupted in the late Pleistocene-Holocene, some indicated ages being 11,200 ± 7,800 ± and 12,400 ± 4,800. A poorly constrained U-Pb date is 0 ± 29 million years. The cones display a young morphology. The basement terrain belongs to the 2,500 ± 100 million year old Dodoman sequence. The hills are remote from all other Tanzania volcanoes. Prior kimberlite activity in the Tanzania craton is recorded 1,150, 189 and 53 million years ago.</p><br>
<p>The tuffs are highly calcitic, vesicular and contain numerous microxenoliths. The petrologically similar lavas show evidence of a differentiation by flow and gravity and have trachytic textures. Lavas have a carbonatitic composition. Olivines with diopside cores are found at the Igwisi Hills. Garnet and orthopyroxene is associated with the diopside. Olivines are surrounded by chromite. Olivines characterize the texture of the Igwisi rocks, where they form spherical inclusions. The olivines are primarily forsteritic in composition. Inclusions in the kimberlite include skeletal apatite, stellate aragonite and calcite. High concentrations of are found in the rock, which may have resulted in the depolymerization of the melt, increasing its fluidity and resulting in effusive activity. Peridotite xenoliths originate from 180 km of depth. Spinels in the groundmass suggest that crustal contamination was extensive. The geochemistry suggests an origin at high pressures (depths of 150 -) and equilibrium temperatures of 1,000 &deg;C. Rainfall has subsequently modified the pyroclastics and formed secondary calcite, while the less permeable lava flows were less modified.</p><br>
<p>The hills have a unique vegetation, with aquatic plants found in the middle of the craters and distinct vegetation on inner crater slopes from the extra-crateric territory. The hills have a rare occurrence of Asclepias pseudoamabilis.</p><br>
<p>The Paul Family Farm is a historic farmstead at 106 Depot Road in Eliot, Maine. Consisting of a well-preserved early-19th century Federal style farmhouse and a small collection of early-20th century outbuildings, it is a representative example of 19th-century farming in the area. The farmhouse parlor is further notable for the c. 1820s stencilwork on its walls. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The Paul Family Farm is located at the southern corner of Depot Road and Goodwin Road (Maine State Route 101), in a rural area northeast of the Eliot village center. The main house is a 2-1/2 story wood frame structure, five bays wide, with a side gable roof, central chimney, and clapboard siding. The front, facing east toward Goodwin Road, is symmetrically arranged, with a center entrance that has a Greek Revival surround with sidelight windows, pilasters, and corniced entablature. A hip-roof porch extends across most of the northern facade, and there is a two-story ell extending westward. The interior of the main block follows a typical center-chimney plan, with a small vestibule and winding staircase in front of the chimney, hall and parlor on either side, and the kitchen behind the chimney. The parlor is finished with wide wainscoting and plaster above, with a Federal style fireplace mantel with pilasters. The walls have been decorated with stencilwork characterized as being of the "Eaton School", similar to the work of itinerant artist Moses Eaton, Jr. This stencilwork was touched up during major work in the 1920s (which included the ell), and is signed by Martin Frost, a local artist of that period.</p><br>
<p>The houses initial construction date is traditionally given as 1804-05. It was probably built by Hugh Tucker Paul, the son of Moses Paul, who first settled the land. The farmstead was still in the hands of Pauls descendants at the time of its listing on the National Register in 1998. Moses N. Paul was responsible for the addition of the ell in the 1920s, along with most of the outbuildings of the farmstead except for its c. 1850 barn, which include a woodshed, workshop, garage, and arbor. He also added chicken coop in the 1960s.</p><br>
<p>Royston Island  is an island in the Australian state of South Australia at the northern end of Pondalowie Bay on the south-west extremity of Eyre Peninsula about 13 km north-west of the town of Stenhouse Bay. The island has enjoyed protected area status since 1967 and since 1972, it has been part of the Innes National Park.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>Royston Island is an island located on the Yorke Peninsula about 13 km north-west of the town of Stenhouse Bay at the northern end of Pondalowie Bay within about 300 m of Royston Head. The island is fringed with detritus consisting of eroded calcarenite and granite boulders which a talus slope rises to a “relatively flat, plateau-like summit” at a height of 38 m above sea level. The island is connected to Royston Head by a “shallow, partially drying reef.” Access to the island is reported as being “probably most accessible by small boat via the north-eastern coast.”</p><br>
<h2>Formation, geology and oceanography</h2><br>
<p>Royston Island was formed about 7000 years ago following the rise of sea levels at the start of the Holocene. Royston Island consists of a calcarenite upper layer over a “pronounced ridge of Lincoln Complex granite.” Royston Island is fringed partly on its north-west and south-east ends by fringing reefs while the waters surrounding its extent drop to a depth of 20 m within a distance of 1 km on its westside.</p><br>
<h2>Flora and fauna</h2><br>

<p>A survey carried out during 1982 on Royston Island recorded a total of nineteen plant species. The island’s summit is dominated by a “low, windswept shrubland” consisting of marsh saltbush and coast daisy-bush accompanied by less abundant species such as southern sea-heath, round-leaved pigface and pointed twinleaf. The talus slopes support shribs of nitre-bush, native juniper, cockies tongue, African boxthorn, yellow-flowering sticky goodenia, Austral stork&#39;s bill, coastal lignum and ruby saltbush, while calcrete ledges associated with the island’s upper levels are “festooned with climbing bower spinach.”</p><br>
<h3>Fauna</h3><br>
<p>Vertebrate animals are represented by birds and reptiles. As of 1982, little penguins were observed as being the common bird on the island followed by silver gulls. Both bird species used the island as a breeding colony. As of 2011, the status of the little penguin colony was not known. Also in 1982, the island is reported as supporting a “large population of marbled geckos.”</p><br>

<h3>European discovery and use</h3><br>
<p>Royston Island is reported as being named after Lord Royston, eldest son of Lord Hardwicke by Matthew Flinders in 1802. The island is also known as “North Island”.</p><br>
<h2>Protected areas status</h2><br>
<p>Royston Island first received protected area status along with Middle Island in Pondalowie Bay in 1967 as a fauna reserve declared under the Crown Lands Act 1929. Since 1972, it has been part of the Innes National Park. Since 2012, the waters adjoining the shoreline of Royston Island have been within a habitat protection zone in the South Spencer Gulf Marine Park. Since at least 2014, Royston Island and the other two islands in Pondalowie Bay (from north to south), Middle Island and South South Island, are closed to access by visitors to the national park.</p><br>
<p>The Hezekiah Chase House is a historic house in United States Route 202 in the center of Unity, Maine. Built in 1826, it is a high-quality example of Federal architecture executed in brick. It is also notable as the birthplace of George Colby Chase, the second president of Bates College. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The Chase House is set at the southwest corner of US 202 and Kanokolus Road in the center of Unity. Set back from the main road, it is a 2-1/2 story brick structure, five bays wide, with a side gable roof, end chimneys, and a stone foundation. The main facade is symmetrically arranged, with a center entrance flanked by sidelight windows and topped by a fanlight window. A 1-1/2 story wood frame ell extends to the rear, and there is a barn near the rear of the property that was once connected to the house via a shed.</p><br>
<p>The property on which the house stands was settled by Stephen Chase in 1782. He built a Cape style house about 1810 which forms the ell of the present house, which was built by his son Hezekiah in 1826. Hezekiah&#39;s son George (1844-1919) was born and raised here. He attended Bates College in its second class, and eventually became a professor of English there. In 1894 he became the second president of Bates, succeeding Oren Cheney and overseeing a major period of its growth.</p><br>
<p>Pebbledene is a historic house at 99 Freeman Street in the York Beach area of York, Maine. Built in 1896, this Queen Anne/Shingle style house was the last large-scale summer house built in the area. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>Pebbledene stands near Barn Point on the east side of Freeman Street, facing the Gulf of Maine, just south of the junction with Bay Haven Road. It is a 2-1/2 story wood frame structure, with a gabled roof studded with gables and projecting sections typical of the Queen Anne style. The house is finished in wooden shingles on the upper floors, while the first floor is weatherboarded. An octagonal tower three stories in height stands at the northeast corner, and a porch wraps around it to the ocean-facing front. A smaller porch, sheltered by a continuation of the roof, extends over the center portion of the lower porch. The interior of the house retains much of its original design work, including fireplaces, with mirrored mantels, and an elaborate central staircase.</p><br>
<p>The house was built in 1896 for Edwin Rogers, president of a Boston-based manufacturer of fire alarms, and was named for the large number of pebbles on nearby beaches. It was built on three lots of a subdivision laid out by Henry Evanston that was generally built out with much less pretentious buildings. Although several other large summer houses like this were built in the York Beach area, most of them have since been demolished or significantly altered.</p><br>
<p>The tower is on the southeast corner.</p><br>
<p>The School Addition Historic District encompasses a middle-class residential area of Batesville, Arkansas that typifies its growth between about 1850 and 1950. It is located between Main Street and Poke Bayou, along two blocks each of Rock and Water Streets , and the intervening blocks of 7th and 8th Streets. Houses in this area are generally of a modest scale, built for tradesmen and craftsmen. They come in a variety of styles, including the traditional I-house, American Craftsman-style bungalows, and ranchs. The district was platted out in 1849 and sold off by the town to raise funds for public education.</p><br>
<p>The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. It includes two previously-listed properties: the Glenn House, and the Wycough-Jones House.</p><br>

<p>The mansion was built about 1800. It was purchased in 1810 by Silvanus Bevan, then passed to his son David Bevan, then to his son Robert Cooper Lee Bevan, then to his son Francis Augustus Bevan, four generations of bankers.</p><br>
<p>At some point between 1899 and 1903, it was sold to Alfred Henry Huth (1850–1910), the bibliophile, and it housed the Huth Library until 1918.</p><br>
<p>In 2005, Robert Hesketh, son of Colonel Roger Fleetwood-Hesketh, Conservative MP for Southport, and "a senior member of the Guinness family", died from "a cocktail of alcohol, heroin and cocaine" at an 18th birthday party there.</p><br>

<p>Woodland Cemetery is a historic cemetery located at 1020 South Fifth Street in Quincy, Illinois. Planned by politician John Wood and opened in 1846, the cemetery is a product of Americas rural cemetery movement of the mid-nineteenth century. The cemeterys grave markers include smaller Victorian monuments and large Gothic Revival and Neoclassical structures. The cemetery was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>From its establishment in 1825 to the 1840s, Quincys only public cemeteries were a burial ground on Maine Street and a small plot in Jefferson Park. The city began to run out of space to bury its dead as it grew, and John Wood, then mayor of Quincy and eventual governor of Illinois, began plans for a larger cemetery in 1846. Wood bought a plot of land overlooking the Mississippi River and planned the cemeterys landscape himself, following the principles of the rural cemetery movement. The movement, which came to America with the opening of the Mount Auburn Cemetery in the Boston area, promoted burial grounds which also served as parks and leisure spots for the living; these cemeteries had curving roads, large green spaces, and exquisite ornamental grave markers. The cemeterys design incorporates Quincys natural geography and is the only remaining part of the city with its original hilly landscape.</p><br>
<p>The cemetery became popular soon after it opened, and it accepted both new burials and relocated remains from the citys other cemeteries; the oldest grave in the cemetery predates its opening by eighteen years. The State of Illinois deemed Wood the owner of the cemetery, which passed to the city of Quincy upon his death; he was also appointed sexton of the cemetery. In the following decades, burials in the cemetery came to reflect significant events in the city. A cholera epidemic swept through Quincy from 1849 to 1851, and many victims were interred in the cemetery despite laws forbidding it. In the 1860s, the cemetery accepted almost 250 of the citys Civil War dead; these burials led to the formation of the Quincy National Cemetery, which was later relocated, and the construction of a marble war memorial. Several large tombs were added in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, and a bandstand was added in 1934.</p><br>
<p>The cemetery was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 1, 2002. A storm damaged the cemetery in 2015, breaking its Civil War memorial.</p><br>
<h2>Architecture</h2><br>
<p>The larger tombs in the cemetery were mainly designed in two styles: Late Gothic Revival and Classical Revival. Late Gothic Revival tombs, which included the Osborn vault, featured medieval influences and simple designs. The Classical Revival tombs took on two different styles; the most prominent variant, seen in the Lynds vault and the large 1927 mausoleum, resembled a Greek temple with columns and a frieze. The other variation, used most prominently in the Rogers vault, featured extensive marble ornamentation and a large portico similar to Neoclassical residential architecture. Many of the individual grave markers include Victorian elements popular in the mid-nineteenth century; these monuments used metal or stone and represented Victorian ideals about life and death. Common motifs include obelisks, spiritual symbols such as angels, symbols representing the deceased&#39;s life such as occupational elements, and natural symbols such as logs or fallen trees. Lambs were commonly used on the graves of children, as they symbolized innocence in Victorian culture.</p><br>
<p>The Quincy East End Historic District is a residential historic district located on the east side of Quincy, Illinois. The district encompasses 493 contributing buildings built from the 1830s to the 1930s, including representative works of nearly every popular American architectural style during the period. The homes in the district were planned by designers of all skill levels, from local craftsmen to nationally significant architects, and the district developed naturally as formal and vernacular styles rose and fell in popularity. The Italianate and Gothic Revival styles are particularly common in the district. The John Wood Mansion, a Greek Revival home built in 1835 for Quincy&#39;s founder, John Wood, is one of the oldest and most significant homes in the district.</p><br>
<p>The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 14, 1985.</p><br>
<p>The Quincy Northwest Historic District is a primarily residential historic district in Quincy, Illinois. Located north and west of the city&#39;s downtown, the district encompasses over 1,600 contributing buildings; these buildings represent almost every prominent architectural style used between 1840 and 1950. The district developed somewhat irregularly, with no consistent plan or progression; however, development roughly spreads away from downtown and the Mississippi River. While most buildings in the districts are homes, businesses and industrial buildings are interspersed in residential areas without forming clear areas of non-residential use. The Italianate and Queen Anne styles are the two most prevalent of the many formal architectural styles which can be seen in the district; common vernacular styles include the gable front house, the shotgun house, the I-house, and the bungalow.</p><br>
<p>The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 11, 2000.</p><br>
<p>Vrtare Male is a pit cave located near Dramalj, a seaside village in Croatia. Its depth is believed to be 39 m, with around 10 m submerged. In 1996, Dragan Pelić, a photographer and spelaeologist from nearby Crikvenica, descended into the cave and found a rare Decapoda specimen, which was confirmed by Croatian spelaeologist Branko Jalžić. This prompted further cave expeditions, starting in 2005, and the establishment of a protected area around Vrtare Male.</p><br>
<p>The cave is home to the freshwater cave prawn (Troglocaris anophthalmus), endemic to Dinaric karst. Vrtare Male is part of the National Ecological Network of Croatia. It is registered under the code HR3000257, and potential for inclusion in Natura 2000.</p><br>
<h2>Expeditions and exhibitions</h2><br>
<p>In 2007, Croatian Natural History Museum organized a palaeontological expedition in Vrtare Male, led by Jalžić, recovering the remains of several specimens of Pleistocene megafauna on the submerged cave floor. The specimens included, among others, a cave lion, one of the largest discovered at the time; The animals were exhibited in 2009 and 2010 in the Crikvenica City Museum and the Croatian Natural History Museum. Panthera Spelaea, a documentary film about Vrtare Male directed by Marin Leko, accompanied the opening of the exhibition in Crikvenica.</p><br>
<p>Another expedition to Vrtare Male, as well as neighbouring caves Vrtare Vele and Vrtare Nove, was organized in July 2011. A total of 184 Pleistocene fossils were collected and stored by the Crikvenica City Museum. The neighbouring caves are thought to have been originally part of a bigger cave system, which was fractioned in a catastrophe during the Pleistocene. Similarly, the cave entrance is thought to have been larger than today, as large animals have been found in the cave.</p><br>
<p>Lalita Ghat  is one of the main ghats on the Ganges River in Varanasi. The ghat is named after Hindu Goddess Lalita and was built in early 19th century by King of Nepal, Rana Bahadur Shah. The ghat houses the famous Nepali Mandir and Lalita Gauri Mandir.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>King of Nepal, Rana Bahadur Shah took exile in Varanasi from 1800 to 1804 and titled himself as "Swami Nirgunanda". During his exile, he decided to build a replica of Pashupatinath Temple in Varanasi. Construction of the temple commenced during his exile / stay in Varanasi. During the construction, Shah moved back to Nepal. On 25 April 1806, Rana Bahadur Shah was stabbed to death by his stepbrother, Sher Bahadur Shah. His son Girvan Yuddha Bikram Shah Deva undertook the construction of the temple (now called Nepali Mandir), a dharamshala and Lalita Ghat. The construction got over 20 years after the deadline.</p><br>
<h2>Significance and religious belief</h2><br>
<p>The ghat is named after Hindu Goddess Lalita. Goddess Lalita is one of the group of ten goddesses of Hindu belief, collectively called Mahavidyas or Dasha-Mahavidyas. She is the foremost and the most important in Dasha-Mahavidyas. All other Mahavidyas concludes in her vidya i.e. Sri Vidya. Her consort is Maha Kameswara. She is the highest aspect of Goddess Adi Shakti. Parvati is the complete incarnation of Lalita Maha Tripura Sundari.</p><br>
<p>Affiliated to this site are the well known Lingam of Ganga Keshava; shrines of Gangatitya, Kashi Devi, Lalita Devi and Bhagirath Tirtha. It is a popular belief that a glimpse of Lalita Devi brings the same blessings as circumambulating the entire world. It is also believed that blessings of the Goddess Lalita eliminates problems and brings prosperity.</p><br>

<p>Lalita Ghat is situated on the bank of Ganges. It is 3.8 kilometers South-East of Varanasi Junction railway station and 100 meters South-West of Manikarnika Ghat.</p><br>
<p>South Island  is an island located in the Australian state of South Australia at the south end of Pondalowie Bay on the south-west extremity of Yorke Peninsula about 11 km north-west by west of the town of Stenhouse Bay. The island has enjoyed protected area status since 1970 and since 1977, it has been part of the Innes National Park.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>South Island is an island located on the south-west extremity of the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia at the southern end of Pondalowie Bay about 11 km north-west by west of the town of Stenhouse Bay.</p><br>
<p>The island has “sheer cliffs” on its exposed north and west coasts where a maximum elevation of 18 m exists while its relatively protected east and south coasts have “low cliffs and ledges” created by swells diffracted within the bay. The island is connected to the mainland by a “neck of drying rock and sand” which does allow access by fauna.</p><br>
<h2>Formation, geology and oceanography</h2><br>
<p>South Island was formed about 6000 years ago following the rise of sea levels at the start of the Holocene. South Island consists of a calcarenite layer over a granite base. South Island is the permanently exposed part of a submerged reef system extending from the southern headland of Pondalowie Bay.</p><br>
<h2>Flora and fauna</h2><br>
<h3>Flora</h3><br>
<p>A survey carried out during 1982 on South Island found that its vegetation consisted of two groups defined by exposure to the weather, sea spray and amount of available soil.</p><br>
<p>The western half of the island is occupied by a "low, open heath” that “clings to any soil-filled hollow and crack” and includes plant tolerant of a “saline rocky coastal or island environment” such as round-leaved pigface, creeping brookweed, marsh saltbush, southern sea heath and bassia.</p><br>
<p>The eastern half of the island which is more protected and has more soil than the western half is occupied by a heath supporting 40 species of plants. Species include bower spinach, coast beard-heath, coast daisy-bush, coast velvet-bush, cockies tongue, clustered swordsedge, common correa, dryland teatree, feather spear-grass, hills daisy, leafless cherry, native juniper, pleated podolepis, Port Lincoln wattle, cushion fanflower, thyme riceflower, slender dodder-laurel and variable groundsel.</p><br>
<h3>Fauna</h3><br>
<p>Vertebrate animals are represented by mammals and birds. A survey carried in 1982 noted evidence that kangaroos had accessed the island from the mainland at low tide. In 1982, the following bird species were observed - osprey, Pacific gull silver gull and welcome swallow.</p><br>

<h3>Aboriginal use</h3><br>
<p>As South Island has been historically accessible by foot at low water, it has been suggested in the literature that local Aboriginal people may have used the island to trap kangaroos to use as a source of food.</p><br>
<h3>European use</h3><br>
<p>The island is reported in various sources as being named as Peter Island, South Island, South Islet and West Bay Island.</p><br>
<p>A navigation aid consisting of an automatic light which is operated by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority is located at the island’s north-west coast.</p><br>
<h2>Protected areas status</h2><br>
<p>South Island was part of a parcel of land declared as a fauna reserve under the Fauna Conservation Act 1964 on 26 November 1970. It was subsequently declared as part of the Innes National Park as part of another parcel of land on 2 June 1977 while the waters adjoining its shoreline have been located within a habitat protection zone in the South Spencer Gulf Marine Park since 2012. Since at least 2014, South Island and the other two islands in Pondalowie Bay (from north to south), Royston Island and Middle Island, have been closed to access by visitors to the national park.</p><br>
<p>Ezra Meeker owned and resided in two homes in Puyallup. The first home of the Meeker family was a cabin on the homestead claim which Meeker purchased from Jerry Stilly. This was a one-room cabin, 8 by square on the claim. Meeker added a second room, doubling the size with double fireplace made of float lava rock between them. The Meeker family lived here from 1862 until 1886. The wooden cabin disappeared over time.</p><br>
<p>After the move to the mansion, Meeker donated the cabin site to the city, who created Pioneer Park. Several steel and concrete pillars outline the dimensions of the original cabin. The ivy vine covering the pillars grew over the original cabin. A statue of Ezra Meeker was placed in the park and dedicated during his lifetime.</p><br>
<p>The family moved into the mansion in 1886 or 1887. It is believed that construction on the mansion was completed about 1890. Mr. Meeker had become wealthy through the production of hops. He was known as the "Hop King of the World." During the years that Meeker lived in the mansion, he worked to trace and mark the Oregon Trail.</p><br>
<p>Meeker spent many hours writing about the Oregon Trail and the history of the Puget Sound. He produced twelve books on these topics. The Meeker Mansion was the social and political center of the valley, during Ezra Meekers life. There are holly trees which he brought from England and also a ginkgo tree.</p><br>
<h2>Exterior</h2><br>
<p>The house has white clapboard siding and ornate wooden trim around all the window and below the eaves. A large front porch has a balcony on the second floor. A smaller balcony is on the east side of the house on the second floor. A porte-cochere, or carriage entrance, is on the west side with a wooden, circular stair to the sun porch. Porches and balconies are decorated with wooden railings and pillars. The foundation is gray stone and a widow&#39;s walk tops the mansion.</p><br>
<p>The pillars of the front porch and the carriage porte-cochere have been replaced with ordinary wooden posts.</p><br>
<h2>Interior</h2><br>
<p>The mansion has fifteen rooms, with 12 ft ceilings. Six fireplaces have hand-carved wooden mantels, ornate tile work, and mirrors. Speaking tubes helped communication in the mansion. Gold-leaf molding, fancy metal doorknobs and hinges, built-in bolt locks on the doors, and inside blinds were part of every room. The ceilings are decorated with frescoes and plaster sculptures. Gaslights were used throughout. The house has interior plumbing with marble fixtures and tin bathtubs. Leaded, stained glass windows are framed with ash and walnut. Wooden partitions made four small rooms for fruit, dairy, and possibly a fuel and storage room. Gas lights were in the basement.</p><br>
<p>The main floor consisted of the drawing room, parlor, library, a bathroom, dining room, kitchen, pantry, hallway, and sun porch. The drawing room has teakwood flooring. The parlor has cedar paneling and the library has redwood. The hallway had the main entrance, consisting of double doors of walnut with panels of leaded, stained glass. The main stairway had a newel post of hand-carved cherry wood, and the railing and balustrades of the stairway were hand-turned cherry wood. A large stained glass window was on the west side of the hallway and was also part of the sun porch. Double sliding doors opened off the hall into the parlor and the drawing room. A third set of double sliding doors connected the parlor and the library.</p><br>
<p>The servants stairway was on the kitchen and went up to the third floor. The second floor had two small rooms, which were used as servants quarters. The master bedroom was built with a small dressing room adjacent that had a built-in wardrobe closet. The billiard room had a fireplace mantel, window casings, and baseboards of curly maple. A large bathroom, the oak room, and the ash room are on the second floor.</p><br>
<p>The ballroom was located on the third floor, and there was a stage for actors and musicians. There were four rooms under the eaves to west, and south of the ballroom, which were for guests. The stairway to the widow&#39;s walk was on the third floor.</p><br>

<p>The El Paso Public Library is a Carnegie library located at 149 West First Street in El Paso, Illinois, United States. The library building was built in 1906-07 to house the city&#39;s library, which originated in 1873. Architect Paul O. Moratz designed the building in the Richardsonian Romanesque style. The library was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The librarys existence dates back to 1873, when the Ladies Library Association formed in El Paso. The library was originally kept in a room of the Eagle Block Building; however, when that building burned down in 1894, the library was destroyed. Following the fire, the new library took on a temporary home while the Ladies Library Association discussed finding a permanent building and giving the city control over the library. The city assumed ownership of the library in 1804 and approved a library tax the following year. In 1906, the city received a $6000 grant from the Carnegie Foundation for a library building. The library was completed the following year and dedicated on February 22, 1907; its collection included 1300 books from the library association and 500 new books ordered for the new building, and El Pasos citizens donated $1000 to purchase even more books. In addition to lending books, the library has held childrens events, art shows, and veterans meetings.</p><br>
<p>The library was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 16, 1994.</p><br>
<h2>Architecture</h2><br>
<p>Paul O. Moratz of Bloomington, who was also noteworthy for his work on his home citys White Place neighborhood, designed the library. Moratz gave the library a Richardsonian Romanesque design inspired by the Morgan Park Library in Chicago. The two-story building has a buff stone exterior with a brick foundation. Round turrets rise on either side of the librarys front entrance; the turrets are linked by a segmental arch above the front door. The building&#39;s hip roof features exposed rafter tails all around and dentillated eaves above the entrance.</p><br>
<p>The Wool Hall was a residential recording studio in the village of Beckington, near Bath, Somerset.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The Wool Hall dates back to the 16th century, when Beckington was a centre of the wool trade in Somerset, England. For a time, it was associated with the nearby Beckington Castle and by the 19th century, it was restored for use as a home and store. In 1968, the hall became a grade II listed building and in the 1980s, it was converted into a recording studio by the pop group Tears for Fears, who used it to record their album Songs from the Big Chair. In 1986 the studio was opened for use by other artists. Van Morrison bought the studio in 1994, having already recorded five albums there, and it served as one of his main recording studios for a large collection of analogue master tapes recorded during his decades-long musical career. In August 2002, Morrison put the studio up for sale for just under a million pounds and it became a private home and studio the following year.</p><br>
<h2>Use as a recording studio</h2><br>
<p>Many artists used The Wool Hall during its 20-year history as a recording studio. The Smiths recorded Strangeways, Here We Come (their final album) there in 1987. According to Morrissey it was at the end of one of those sessions, in "a glut of meetings with accountants and lawyers at The Wool Hall Studio... the Smiths breathed a last exhausted sigh and folded." Morrissey also recorded his first solo album, Viva Hate at the studio shortly after; its title a reference to the tension of the earlier Smiths&#39; sessions. Other artists who used the studio included Annie Lennox, Joni Mitchell (parts of Chalk Mark In A Rain Storm), Julia Neigel, The Pretenders (Last of the Independents), David Sylvian (Secrets of the Beehive, recorded in August 1986), Sisters of Mercy (parts of Floodland), 808 State, Stereophonics, and Paul Weller.</p><br>
<p>Lake Louise is a lake in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. It has a surface area of approximately 67 acre on The National Map and is located entirely in Franklin Township. The lake is dammed by the Lake Louise Dam, which is in poor condition, as of 1980. Lake Louise is situated on Sutton Creek and drains an area of 2.69 square miles. As of 1980, its watershed is mostly forested. The Lake Louise Lake Association was given a Growing Greener mini-grant in 2012.</p><br>
<h2>Geography, geology, and watershed</h2><br>
<p>The main inflows to Lake Louise are Sutton Creek and two unnamed streams. The main outflow is Sutton Creek. Under normal conditions, the lake has an area of 56 acre, a volume of 193 acre.ft, and a length of 4,000 ft. However, the maximum storage capacity is 705 acre.ft. The lake is 4 mi upstream of the Susquehanna River.</p><br>
<p>Lake Louise is dammed by the Lake Louise Dam.</p><br>
<p>Lake Louise is in the Glaciated Low Plateaus section of the Appalachian Plateaus physiographic province. The main rock formation underlying the lake is the Devonian-age Susquehanna Group, which consists of conglomerate, siltstone, sandstone, and shale.</p><br>
<p>The watershed of Lake Louise has an area of 2.69 square miles. As of 1980, the watershed of Lake Louise is mostly forested. Most slopes in the watershed are gentle or moderate.</p><br>
<p>Lake Louise is entirely within the United States Geological Survey quadrangle of Center Moreland.</p><br>
<h2>Hydrology</h2><br>
<p>In October 2007, the concentration of nitrate/nitrogen at the inlets to Lake Louise ranged from 0.19 to 0.33 mg/l. In November 2009, the concentration ranged from 0.10 to 0.46 mg/l and in May 2011, the concentration ranged from 0.09 to 0.33 mg/l. At the outlet of Lake Louise, the concentrations on those three dates were 0.19 mg/l, 0.12 mg/l, and 0.24 mg/l, respectively. For comparison, healthy lakes generally have concentrations of less than 0.05 mg/l in the summertime.</p><br>
<p>In October 2007, the concentration of phosphorus at the inlets to Lake Louise ranged from 0.61 to 1.62 mg/l. In November 2009, the concentration ranged from 0.04 to 0.99 mg/l and in May 2011, the concentration ranged from 0.04 to 0.53 mg/l. At the outlet of Lake Louise, the concentrations on those three dates were 0.00 mg/l, 0.29 mg/l, and 0.59 mg/l, respectively. For comparison, a phosphorus concentration of more than 0.03 mg/l indicates a eutrophic lake.</p><br>

<p>In 2012, the Lake Louise Lake Association was awarded a Growing Greener mini-grant for sediment removal, shoreline stabilization, riparian buffer establishment, and invasive species control on Lake Louise.</p><br>
<p>Cedar Lake is in Le Flore County, Oklahoma inside the Ouachita National Forest. It is about 12 miles south of Heavener, Oklahoma, and 40 miles west of Mena, Arkansas.</p><br>
<p>It is a different body of water from the privately owned Cedar Lake in Canadian County, Oklahoma.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The lake surface covers 78 acres. The storage capacity is 1,000 acre-feet. Its earthen dam is 52 feet high and 1,000 feet long. The maximum storage is 1,370 acre-feet.</p><br>
<p>Now owned by the U. S. Forest Service, the lake was constructed on Big Cedar Creek in 1937 by the Civilian Conservation Corps for erosion-control purposes. It is now primarily used for recreation, and features fishing, boating, picnicing, hiking and camping activities. The lake is open year-round.</p><br>
<h2>Fishing</h2><br>
<p>The lake is regularly stocked with largemouth bass, catfish and bluegill.</p><br>
<p>Dale Miller set a state record when he caught a 14 pound 13.7 ounce largemouth bass, having a length of 26 inches and a girth of 23 inches. ODWC confirmed the record measurement, then released the fish back to the lake. The previous record was held by Benny Williams, Jr., who caught a 14 pound 12 ounce bass from the same lake on March 23, 2012.</p><br>
<p>Cummings Pond is a lake in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. It has a surface area of more than 40 acre and is located in Franklin Township. The lake was formed approximately 27,000 years ago by glacial action. It was historically stocked with fish and cattails and alders occur in its vicinity. In the early 1900s, the lake was used for boating, fishing, and ice harvesting.</p><br>

<p>Cummings Pond is a natural lake and had no dam in the early 1900s. It has a regular, oval shape. The lake&#39;s maximum width is 1,350 ft and its maximum length is 2,000 ft. It has a surface area of 43.8 acre and a volume of 46 million gallons. The depth in most of the lake is 5 ft, but the deepest parts can reach 10 ft. The lake was originally close to 16 ft deep.</p><br>
<p>Cummings Pond is approximately 27,000 years old and is in a depression cut in hard shale by glacial action. The lake mostly retains its original shape. Up to 30 ft of sediment is under the lake.</p><br>
<p>On three sides, Cummings Pond is surrounded by hills that rise 250 ft above the lake. One side of the lake was highly marshy in the early 1900s.</p><br>

<p>The watershed of Cummings Pond has an area of 0.5 square miles. In the early 1900s, the watershed consisted entirely of second-growth forest. Cummings Pond is entirely within the United States Geological Survey quadrangle of Center Moreland.</p><br>
<p>Cummings Pond was stocked with yellow perch in the 1930s. The lake is in the C-1 Conservation district, whose purpose is to protect it and other hydrological features. Cattails and alders occur in the vicinity of the lake.</p><br>

<p>Cummings Pond was entered into the Geographic Names Information System on August 2, 1979. Its identifier in the Geographic Names Information System is 1198628.</p><br>
<p>In the early 1900s, a public road ran parallel to Cummings Pond 20 ft above the lake. A farmhouse was also located near the lake, 25 ft above the water line. During this time period, it was used for boating and fishing, as well as a private ice supply. Its ownership was claimed by Daniel B. Winters.</p><br>
<p>Cummings Pond is navigable with rowboats. A privately run campground with an area of 21 acre is located on the lake.</p><br>
<p>Lake Manjo  is a manmade lake in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. It has a surface area of approximately 9 acre and is situated in Franklin Township. The surfical geology near the lake consists of bedrock and Wisconsinan Till. The lake is not accessible to the public. However, a camp known as Camp Orchard Hill is located near the lake.</p><br>

<p>The surficial geology immediately to the north of Lake Manjo mainly features bedrock consisting of sandstone and shale. To the south and west, however, the surficial geology consists of a till known as Wisconsinan Till. A small patch of Wisconsinan Ice-Contact Stratified Drift also occurs a short distance to the west of the lake.</p><br>
<h2>History and recreation</h2><br>
<p>Lake Manjo was entered into the Geographic Names Information System on August 2, 1979. Its identifier in the Geographic Names Information System is 1199105. The lake was also historically known as Manjo Lake. It has existed since at least 1938.</p><br>
<p>There are at least two docks on Lake Manjo, one of which is 15 ft long. The docks were built by 2010 by Eagle Scout David Novak and weigh more than 1,000 lb apiece. The docks were intended to be multi-use.</p><br>
<p>A camp known as Camp Orchard Hill is located at Lake Manjo. In 2013, an Eagle Scout made improvements to the lakes waterfront area. These included constructing four benches, building ten mooring stations for boats, and improving the lakes docks.</p><br>
